Frequently Asked VA Coverage Questions

Should I give up my private health insurance or other insurance (like Medicare) if I’m accepted into the VA health care program?

This is a personal decision. If someone that qualifies for VA coverage and is at a lower priority group, based upon federal funding, one could lose VA health care benefits in the future.

If you have Medicare Part B (coverage for doctors, outpatient services and diagnostic laboratory services..) and you cancel it, you would not be able to enroll back in until the General Enrollment Period with Medicare of the following year. Typically, the reinstatement of coverage may start later in the year on July 1st.

If I already have VA health care benefits, should I still sign up for Medicare when I turn 65?

Yes. It is encouraged to do so. Why?

Having Medicare and enrolling into a Medicare Advantage Plan means you have access and coverage if you need to go to a non-VA hospital or doctor – so you have more options to choose from.

Funding for VA health care may change in the future. Choosing health care benefits that you are eligible for may prove helpful when you need them.

What if I sign up for a Medicare Part D stand alone plan or Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage?

You will be able to get medicine from non-VA doctors and fill your prescription at your local pharmacy instead of through the VA mail-order service.

If I’m signed up for VA health care, and I also have Medicare, what’s covered by each?

You will have an option of who you wish to choose to receive care from. Either to receive care from a VA medical center or other VA location or receive care from a non-VA care facility.
